Three scholarships are available to overseas applicants starting a full-time PhD research degree at Edinburgh College of Art (ECA) in September 2015. Each scholarship covers the overseas rate of tuition fee. Subject to satisfactory progress, the scholarships are awarded for three years. The application deadline is 20 March 2015.

How to Apply:
The mode of applying is online. To apply for a scholarship you must first apply for admission for an eligible programme of study at the University of Edinburgh. Once you have applied for admission you will receive your University Username (UUN). Your UUN is the letter ‘s’ followed by your matriculation number; for example, s0987654. Eligible students should complete an online scholarship application before the application deadline of 20 March 2015.

Hungarian Government Scholarship’s  applications are invited to undertake Master of Science degree courses (MSc) at one of the participating universities. Scholarship Description:
All of the below mentioned costs are financed by the Hungarian Government, according to the Agreement between FAO and Hungary in 2007. Scholarship students are entitled to the same health care coverage offered to Hungarian students during the course of the scholarship. The scholarship covers student costs only; family members are not supported within the frame of this programme.

British Council To Offer Open Online Courses Again

British Council repeats free open online courses through a web portal named futurelearn.com. This is the second time the council is offering the course by popular demand.

The course will explore English: Language and Culture, and will be carried for 6 weeks beginning from February 6.

BC has introduced its first course in September.

The course aims to provide better understanding of language for work and study. Chris Brandwood, Regional Business Development Manager, English, British Council South Asia in a statement said, “This course is for those keen to improve their English for work, travel or study.

Large numbers of people from across the world signed up for the first edition of the course and we look forward to large numbers this time too.”

Students will be coached with short videos presenting different topic each week and centres on social interaction, where people engage in debates and participate in online quizzes.

The council has collaborated with FutureLearn and partner universities to allow students getting access to British Council English language content and assessment.

The first edition of this course was launched in September, 2014 and was quite successful.

In its first edition, there were over 1.22 lakh learners registered and participation levels were the highest that FutureLearn has seen since their launch in December 2012.

A number of McDonald Fellowships are awarding MS International Federation to young researchers from promising countries. Fellowships enable the recipient to travel to an established research institution to work with leading researchers in MS with a view to returning to their own country to establish a programme of MS research. The fellowship consists of a two-year grant, around UK £30,000 per year, to cover travel and living costs, and an additional contribution of UK £2,000 per year to the host institution. Scholarship Description:
Professor McDonald had a monumental impact on MS research, treatment and understanding, providing invaluable breakthroughs in the field. He was a member of the MS International Federation’s International medical and scientific board from 1980 and its chairman from 1999 to 2003. The McDonald Fellowship was formerly known as the Du Pré Fellowship. Every year the MS International Federation offers a number of McDonald Fellowships to young researchers from emerging countries*. Fellowships enable the recipient to travel to an established research institution to work with leading researchers in MS, with a view to returning to their own country to establish a programme of MS research that involves the application of the newly learned techniques. The fellowship consists of a two-year grant, around UK £30,000 per year, to cover travel and living costs, and an additional contribution of UK £2,000 per year to the host institution. In 2015, they will accept applications from all areas of research related to MS and encourage applications in the areas of symptom relief, rehabilitation and palliative care.

A number of McDonald fellowships will be awarded.

Duration of award(s):
Fellowships are awarded for a period of two years. The MS International Federation requires a short report at the end of the first year of the fellowship. Second-year funding depends on the submission of this report.

What does it cover?
The fellowship consists of a two-year grant, around UK £30,000 per year, to cover travel and living costs, and an additional contribution of UK £2,000 per year to the host institution. The fellowship may also be used as a supplement for work related to MS by a candidate who has been accepted for training in a recognised institute (within the six months prior to nomination) but who doesn’t have enough money to cover the total cost.

How to Apply:
Students should email the nomination form and accompanying documents. Before nomination, candidates need to have identified a suitable project and discussed their involvement with the project supervisor of the institution.

Applications are invited for UNU scholarships available for applicants from developing countries to undertake PhD program in Sustainability Science. A limited number of PhD scholarships (covering tuition fees and living costs) for a maximum of 36 months are awarded for outstanding applicants who can demonstrate a need for financial assistance. Eligibility: Applicants for the PhD in Sustainability Science are required to have met all of the following requirements by the application deadline in order to be considered:
-Strong interest in sustainability studies;
-Demonstrated commitment to study and understand global issues;
-A completed Master’s degree in disciplines related to sustainability studies and a minimum of 2 years of practical field experience related to UNU-IAS research themes or
-Two completed Master’s degrees, at least one of which must be in disciplines related to sustainability studies;
-Those who expect to receive a second Master’s degree before the entrance period – September 2015 – may also apply.
-A GPA of 3.5 or above on a 4.0 scale on at least one of the Master’s degrees earned; and
-English language proficiency: The minimum score requirements for English language qualifications required by UNU-IAS are: 600 in TOEFL – Paper-Based Testing (PBT); 100 in TOEFL – Internet-Based Testing (IBT) and 7.0 in IELTS – Academic format

Scholarship Description: The PhD programme in Sustainability Science aims to produce scholars who will become key researchers in the field of sustainability science. The programme takes an innovative approach to sustainability, seeking to promote a better understanding of the issues by incorporating global change perspectives, specifically those related to climate change and biodiversity. The programme will equip graduates with comprehensive, multidisciplinary knowledge of sustainability problems, and deepen their understanding of the role of environmental sustainability in addressing current issues related to global change. Students undertake problem-oriented research, acquiring the quantitative and qualitative analytical research skills necessary to understand the underlying principles of various systems involved in sustainability issues and debates. Through coursework and research, PhD students gain critical thinking and problem-solving skills, as well as the technical literacy required to address sustainability problems.
Number of award(s): A limited number of PhD scholarships will be awarded.
Duration of award(s): Scholarships will be offered for a maximum of 36 months.
What does it cover? The scholarship covers the full tuition fees and provides a monthly allowance of 150,000 JPY for living expenses for a maximum of 36 months. Travel costs to and from Japan, visa handling fees, and health/accident insurance costs must be covered by the student.
Selection Criteria: These PhD scholarships will be awarded to outstanding applicants from developing countries who can demonstrate a need for financial assistance.
How to Apply: During admission selection process, outstanding applicants from developing countries with financial need will be automatically considered as candidates for the award of scholarships at UNU-IAS. Thus, no separate application is necessary.
Scholarship Application Deadline: The application deadline is 30 April 2015.
